Hiking Larch Valley – Fall Colours in Banff National Park

Fall is one of the most beautiful times to visit the Canadian Rockies. For a brief period near the end of September, alpine forests turn shades of gold before the arrival of winter. One of the best ways to experience the season is by hiking through the region’s famous larch trees at peak colour. Perhaps the most well-known place to see this transformation is Larch Valley, a trail above Moraine Lake that becomes especially beautiful during peak larch season.
The hike into Larch Valley begins at the shore of Moraine Lake. After a brief walk along the shoreline, the trail disappears into the forest where the steady climb begins. A long series of steep switchbacks follows, quickly gaining elevation above Moraine Lake and the valley below. This section felt tougher than expected, with seemingly endless turns through dense evergreen forest. We paused occasionally and looked back as the trees parted behind us, revealing glimpses of the bright blue waters below.
After this long climb, the trail forks toward Larch Valley itself, where the scenery changes. The first stands of golden larch trees begin to appear across the meadow, framed by mountain peaks in the distance. In late September, the valley glows with warm yellow and orange tones, creating a contrast that feels completely different from summer in the Canadian Rockies. Walking through the larches felt like stepping into a fairytale landscape, especially with the cool alpine air and the growing quiet beyond the busiest sections of trail.
Further into Larch Valley, the terrain gradually opens into a broad alpine basin beneath the surrounding peaks. Behind the valley rise the mountains of the Valley of the Ten Peaks, while ahead the landscape stretches toward Mount Temple and the higher alpine terrain leading in the direction of Sentinel Pass – an extension many hikers continue toward.

The valley looked striking even in midday light, with blue skies and passing clouds contrasting against the golden colours spread across the valley below.
Near the upper end of the valley, small alpine lakes known as the Minnestimma Lakes reflect the surrounding peaks and golden larches beneath the slopes leading toward Sentinel Pass. With calm water, scattered larch trees along the shoreline and the massive mountains rising behind them, this remote area created one of the most memorable scenes of the entire hike.

Larch season in the Canadian Rockies is remarkably short, lasting just weeks before the landscape begins to shift toward winter. Hints of that transition were already visible at higher elevations during our hike, with early traces of snow on the surrounding peaks.
This quick transition makes visiting places like Larch Valley at peak colour especially memorable. Between the golden alpine forests and crisp autumn air, the landscape feels completely different from the summer scenery of Banff National Park.
Despite the challenging climb, the views and atmosphere of Larch Valley made it a perfect place to experience this short but spectacular season in the Canadian Rockies.
